Meet Ivana Baquero’s co-star:

A Thomaston resident will make his acting debut in a soon-to-be-released movie called “New Daughter” starring actor Kevin Costner.

The actor is Marmalade, a yellow tabby cat that belongs to Deborah Howington, an animal lover and animal trainer who has worked with a number of films. She went looking for a tabby cat to appear in “New Daughter.”

What is most remarkable about Marmalade’s story is that he is a rescued cat, found by Howington at the Upson County Animal Shelter in May, 2008, just days before a tabby cat would be needed on the set of the movie.

Howington knew when she saw him that the yellow cat was just what she had been looking for.

Howington, who has worked with Southern Animal Talent Agency for 15 years supplying animal “actors,” had put out the word in Upson County animal circles of her search for an orange tabby cat. Upson County animal control director Smart Web called to tell her he had a yellow cat.

What she liked about Marmalade, which she named after his movie character, was his attitude. It was precisely that attitude Howington was searching for. In his role in the movie, Marmalade had to hiss and spit like he had seen a ghost, and he did it well.

Marmalade worked well with Costner, Howington said. “He (Costner) said he absolutely would use Marmalade again. He loved that cat and he loved his story.”

Howington is an assistant and friend to Southern Animal Talent Agency owner Senia Phillips. They met years ago when Phillips came to Howington seeking golden retriever puppies for a Dirt Devil commercial. Howington raised and trained golden retrievers and had a litter of adorable pups just right for the commercial, she explained.

Since then, Howington supplied animals and critters for about 30 movies, including “Black Dog,” starring the late Patrick Swayze, “Flash,“Big Fish,” (in which she worked with 38 cats) “The Joneses,” “Road Trip 1” and “Christmas Memory,” starring Patty Duke. Her Coton de Tulear (a type of dog she breeds) named Mr. Apollo of Woodland Cottage recently appeared in a Tyler Perry movie.

She said images of her golden retrievers are also seen on the box of Heartguard, heartworm prevention medication for dogs. The dogs’ names were Chase and Royal.

“I had good access to animals, dogs and cats,” she said. In addition to Marmalade, Howington supplied to the movie “New Daughter” 1,000 brown spiders, maggots, centipedes, milipedes and a little brown mouse. Not a single creature was harmed, she said.

Howington said animals rights personnel area on the set of all movies to oversee treatment of the animals. The representatives on the set of “New Daughter” were so taken by Marmalade’s story, they planned to do a write up on him, Howington explained.

Marmalade, a bit heavier than he was in “New Daughter,” will also appear in another movie and filming begins in October. Howington can only say it will be a South Carolina location.

He was a true professional on the set. Despite numbers of cameras and bright lights, “this cat never spooked once,” Howington said. “He loves the cameras. He loves working. Kevin Costner toted him around everywhere.”

“He’s probably the best cat I ever worked with,” she said. “New Daughter was one of the best movies I ever worked on.”

There is now another yellow tabby in the Howington household. They call him Baby Marmalade and he is being groomed to be a double for Marmalade. And Howington continues to look for an adult Marmalade look-alike to work with him in films.

Meanwhile, Marmalade enjoys life in the country with his new family, waiting, like any actor, for another great script.

“Keeper of the Pinstripes” is the last film to shoot inside the old Yankee Stadium and the first in the new stadium. It is also the first film since “Pride of the Yankees” (1942) to be endorsed by the Yankees

Interperating Pan’s Labyrinth
Posted by Mike in Uncategorized on 09 28th, 2009| icon32 Comments »

****WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS****

I just thought I’d like to share a few thoughts that I had on Pan’s Labyrinth… Perhaps a twisted view, but I’m sure all of you would find some echo in your own hearts…

This Story I believe is about Love and Human perseverance, and can be adapted to everyones needs and concerns as they go through their life.

Del Toro was brought up as a strict Catholic, and often, thought about deep things, that though Christian in essence can be heart felt by anyone here, regardless of whether they have a religion, or whether they just believe in doing good to all mankind…

Our story starts and ends with Ofelia, we take all our encouragement from her…

Pan’s Labyrinth begins with Ofelia being torn apart from her father who she lost through an untimely death; perhaps some of you have really experienced family problems, I haven’t, but I can imagine… Ofelia, has to be taken away from her father, and has to start to call another person “father”… Can someone really take the place of someone you really love? Ofelia’s trouble’s start at the very beginning of the story.

But though people often come into trouble, yet we find that sometime there is a start of something good. Though Ofelia had all these problems, yet she had the faith to realise that there is a real fantasy world out there, and that she was no ordinary girl, she was a princess. I think Del Toro wants us to see here that, we are not just ordinary people, we are special to someone. Also at this time Ofelia realised that she had a friend in Mercedez, doubtless everyone has had a special friend…?

anyway, so in all her problems she started to realise that there was some good left in the world… and that it is worth living for (and eventually dying for)

Ofelia Gets three tasks that she has to get right. We can interperate this as a human’s job to do good to all people. Well Ofelia gets them all right until she eats something next to the Pale man. She was greedy, and she wanted some of those tasty looking grapes. Perhaps sometimes it may seem alright to just take one thing… But Ofelia had to realise that this could cost the lives of the Fairies. Often times a king is greedy for land or whatever, and he loses lots of soldiers over getting what he really didn’t need at all. Del Toro wants us to watch out that we are not greedy.

So Ofelia comes to her final test… the greatest test of all: LOVE. She is told to sacrifice her baby brother… But in the end love prevails and ofelia gives her own blood, and finally makes it to her kingdom.

The kingdom can be interperated as Heaven, or whatever we are spending our lives to achieve… But the most important thing is that Ofelia never gave up, or said she can’t complete the tasks… and finally it was love, not violence or anything, it was love that finally got her to her kingdom

smile.gif

I just want to mention 2 other things Ofelia’s father and mother were seen in Her kingdom, and also the Fairies that where eaten by the Pale Man where there too…

Ivana Baquero

Born: 11th June 1994

Birthplace: Barcelona, Spain

Director Guillermo Del Toro picked Baquero out of 1000 young actresses for the lead role of Ofelia, in 2006’s Pan’s Labyrinth. Del Toro has said he knew she was perfect for the part the moment he met her the and rewrote the part of Ofelia to accommodate an 11 year-old Baquero(the character was originally aged 8). Her performance won critical acclaim and the film won three Oscars in 2007. In 2008 Baquero worked with Del Doro [incorect as Del Toro didn't have anything to do with Anarchist's Wife] again for a supporting role in The Anarchist’s Wife. Next she’ll be starring in two American films: The New Daughter, a thriller with Kevin Costner, and Keeper of the Pinstripes, with Josh Lucas.
